New farm looking to foster farm animals?
my fiance and i recently put an offer in on a small 8 acre hobby farm and we were looking to provide foster care for farm type animals (horses, goats, donkeys etc….)
my question is how do you go about doing this? do i contact the humane society? we’re not rich we’re a typical pay cheque to pay cheque couple and we’re worried about the medical bills more than anything, does the humane society look after that kind of thing or is it out of pocket?
i’m a farm kid born and raised and he’s more than willing to learn to care for the animals.
i guess what i’m saying is that we want to do something good but we’re worried about the financial implications when it comes to non routine care.
Be careful not to bite off more than you can chew. A friend of mine runs a horse rescue. She gets ownership of the animals and adopts out what she can and keeps the really infirm ones or euthanizes them if they are too far gone.
She got a 501(c)3 from IRS so she can take charitable donations. Maybe there is something similar in your country if you are not in U.S.? Even so it is a labor of love and she lives on a shoestring in order to take care of them.
Also since slaughter has been stopped in the U.S. (last I heard the last facility is currently shut down) she has been swamped with more rescues than she can handle and has had to turn down new horses.
The other poster was wise to advise you to consult your local humane society (also maybe animal control?) to find out what you are expected to cover so that you avoid unexpected surprises. If you live too close to the wire financially already then think very hard about taking on this responsibility as often unwanted horses come with medical problems and/or neglect issues that can be expensive.
Definitely get your farm first – if not already turnkey you will have a lot of upfront work to make it horse-ready. I’ve been there and let me tell you it costs a lot of money to outfit a farm with fence and a barn.
Good luck to you.
