young horse and a bran mash…plz help!?

My QH gelding turned 3 last july, and I was wondering if I could give him a bran mash?? I already give my 18 yr old a bran mash every now and then. I heard that brand mash can cause a calcuim imbalance in young horses and they bones wont fully develop…. he’ll be 3 1/2 in march. if I do give him a bran mash it will be his first one every had. I need to no if its ok for him to eat a mash bout once every one or 2 weeks, thinking bout giving him rice bran or oat bran, which bran is best? his weight is very good, but thought it would be good for the odd cold day? will it give him energy? cause his already like a “SpRiNg” very excitable, very active… literly..lol…..plz help!

A bran mash now and then won’t hurt anything. Usually horses are fed either rice or wheat bran. Both wheat and rice bran are very high in phosphorus – if fed regularly they could cause a problem, as the body *will* maintain certain calcium/phosphorus ratio even if it has to leech calcium from the bones to do so. If your horse is already eating a diet that is very high in calcium (straight or high % of alfalfa) the risk is lowered.

Wheat bran really has no benefit other than that of a warm treat. Rice bran is very high in fat and can add calories to the diet and put a nice shine on the coat. Pound for pound, you get more of a benefit with oil, but many people feed rice bran and are happy with it.
