Milking Cows on a Rotary Dairy Farm in Australia

How much would it cost to run a self-sufficient farm?

I’m looking into moving my family back onto the farm like I grew up, money for monthly and yearly things will not be an issue. But I would like to know a basic number for the cost of equipment, buildings, and product storage, and, if possible, maintenance costs for those. Land prices we have already figured, but I am still open to recommendations for land size for a family of 6 that may expand.

We are all very picky eaters so we don’t need a large number of things to sustain our happiness with what we eat. I see, primarily, what we would need in decent quantities is wheat and corn. As well small assortment of vegetables and fruit. None of us eat meat except for some occasional chicken, but not very often (we tend to be disgusted by meat). Milk, cheese, butter, cream, ect. is another thing that we would like to have in quantities and taking care of a few dairy cows for that is not a big deal.

A solar system has been priced and reviewed to include 100% off-grid use.

If it is truly self sufficient it should cost nothing. the income should cover all costs, but I don’t think that is what you are talking about.

Dairy farming is a class of agricultural, or an animal husbandry, enterprise, for longterm production of milk, usually from dairy cows but also from goats and sheep, which may be either processed onsite or transported to a dairy factory for processing and eventual retail sale. Most dairy farms sell the male calves born by their cows, usually for veal production, or breeding depending on quality of the bull calf, rather than raising nonmilkproducing stock. citation needed] Many dairy farms also grow their own feed, typically including corn, alfalfa, and hay. This is fed directly to the cows, or is stored as silage for use during the winter season. Additional dietary supplements are often added to the feed to increase quality milk production Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 88 Publication Date: 2010/07/24 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.21 inches
