Ray Schreyer discusses dot jobs
Legally blind, but have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing. What next?
Last December I started losing my sight, eventually progressed to being legally blind. Long before that, my hospital fired me because I could no longer perform my job description – not because I couldn’t see, but because sight was required for my job.
So are there any suggestions for what I can do as a legally blind nurse? I’ve considered teaching, but the idea of trying to read student’s handwriting is intimidating. Also, I can’t drive, so I would be at the mercy of bus transportation schedules for a job. I don’t want to start a career in selling junk from home, telemarketing, etc. I enjoyed being a nurse and want to know what I can do with my knowledge and experience. And no, the hospital I worked at does not have a union, I was an at-will employee. And the local hospitals do not have any telenursing or ask a nurse departments.
First of all, I am so sorry for your loss of eyesight. I was in the health care field most of my career (x-ray technologist), and I would have really been disappointed to have to give up that career. If I were you, I’d double check on teaching — you could always get a student to help you with the reading of students’ written work. Also, what about insurance companies — they often have a nurse on call for telephone calls. Or, what about a doctor’s office — they often have a triage nurse taking calls and deciding whether a patient needs to go to the ER, be seen at the clinic immediately, can wait for an appointment, or just give advice over the phone and the patient does not need to be seen at all. I hope some of these suggestions are helpful and that other people also respond. Good luck to you — if you have time, please post an edit and let us know what you are going to do.
