Why do American’s believe that our economic system is a pure free market economy?
We hear a lot about socialism and communism these days–mostly due to increased visibility of government efforts to prop up failing industries and financial institutions? Why do you think the U.S. economy is a complete “free market.” Nearly every industry and enterprise receives government stimulus and incentive in some way.
Are you aware of farm subsidies? What about fuel and road tax incentives for transportation-based industries? What about taxes and tariffs on competing goods from other countries? How about student grants and loans? What about special legislation for market instruments and enterprise zones? There are literally thousands of examples.
Why do you think our markets are free? Curious?
We have not had a pure “Free Market Economy” in the 200+ years we have been a country. It is something that many Democrats acknowledge but you are the first Republican I have ever heard acknowledge this. I have never said I believed our economy was a pure free market economy but it is the closest thing to it that I have ever seen. Both Canada’s and Mexico’s economies are far more restrictive than ours.
