Aquaculture has become a popular form of agriculture. Many people are looking at various aquaculture enterprises as a way to start a new business. In considering an aquaculture business venture, there are a number of important decisions to be made. This section is intended to assist potential producers by outlining critical questions and briefly describing available alternatives.
Deciding which aquaculture species to produce is the first step. Each species has its own potential and constraints, biological and economic. The principal question is, can this species be raised and sold for a profit in Arkansas? In selecting a species to raise, it is critical to study not only the production methods, but also markets available and accessible to your proposed operation as well as anticipated costs, market price, and expected profits.
The next step prior to entering commercial farming is to develop a business plan and begin to contact lenders and investors to acquire the necessary capital. You must ask yourself if you have the skills, management ability, and time to run a fish farm. If not, you will have to hire a manager. Your plan should indicate potential profits. Will the profit make your efforts worthwhile? Visits to commercial farms and with Extension personnel can help you set goals for your aquaculture operation.

Fish Farming $113.11 Fish farming is the principal form of aquaculture, while other methods may fall under mariculture. Fish farming involves raising fish commercially in tanks or enclosures, usually for food. A facility that releases juvenile fish into the wild for recreational fishing or to supplement a species natural numbers is generally referred to as a fish hatchery. The most important fish species raised by fish farms are, in order, salmon, carp, tilapia, catfish and cod. Increasing demands on wild fisheries by commercial fishing has caused widespread overfishing. Fish farming offers an alternative solution to the increasing market demand for fish and fish protein. Integrated Fish Farming Systems $113.11 The rapid increase in world population has led to severe strain on resources leading to undesirable consequences like water scarcity and protein deficiency, especially in developing countries. Increased fish production from fish farming is a major solution to the dietary protein shortage but compounded fish feed is expensive and may be out of the reach of the ordinary fish farmer. There is a need for a lowcost system of fish production to cater for the food needs of poor and at the same time maximize the utilization of resources. Integrated fish farming (IFF) is such a lowcost system and it involves the combination of fish farming with other human activities especially agriculture. This book lays down the basic concepts and practice of integrated fish farming in terms of the history, present status, necessity, types, combination ratios etc. Costbenefit analyses of some IFF systems are also explored; the health risks to human beings and fish from IFF systems and water quality issues are also treated. The book will be of interest to students, researchers, farmers, extension agents, health authorities and the general public. The Kerala Kitchen: $21.11 Since ancient times, seafarers and traders have been drawn by the lure of spices to Kerala, a verdant, topical state on the Malabar Coast of South India. Saint Thomas also traveled this spice route, converting several Brahmin families who later intermarried with Syrians who had settled here; thus was born the vibrant Syrian Christian community of Kerala. Today, ayurvedic massage resorts and backwater cruises make this scenic land a top tourist destination, and spices still draw both travelers and gourmands to its rich culinary heritage. It is this legacy that The Kerala Kitchen brings us, through 150 delectable recipes and the unforgettable stories that accompany them. Featured here are such savory delights as Meen Vevichathu (Fish Curry Cooked in a Clay Pot), Parippu (Lentils with Coconut Milk) and Thiyal (Shallots with Tamarind and Roasted Coconut). Equally mouthwatering are a variety of rice preparations, Outtu (Steamed Rice Cake) and Paalappam (Lace-Rimmed Pancakes), and tempting desserts like Karikku Pudding (Tender Coconut Pudding). Authentic and easy to prepare, these recipes are adapted for the American kitchen, and accompanied by a guide to spices, herbs, and equipment, as well as a glossary of food terms. Interwoven between these recipes, in the best tradition of the cookbook memoir, are tales of talking doves, toddy shops, traveling chefs and killer coconuts. Full of beautiful photographs, charming illustrations, and lyrical memories of food and family, The Kerala Kitchen is a delicious, memorable read. |
