Rabbit Farm Supplies

How many acres is just enough for a small farm for a family of four?

Estimating for a family of four. Ideally, we’d like to grow and can our own vegetables, have a couple of fruit trees, and have free range chickens, a few head cattle, a few milking cows, some pigs, some rabbits. But we only need enough land to support our own food supply (I know we’ll have to still buy some things from the store) If you have an animal plan, and or cost figures you’d like to share, I’d love to see it.

With all due respect, if you’re asking this question, you’re nowhere near being able to handle what you’re thinking of. That right there is an immense amount of work. Unless you want every animal to be walking around in worn out undersized dirt paddocks you need to figure in quite a bit of land. Cattle stay outside 24/7, you don’t rotate them in and out of barns like horses to reduce the impact of near constant grazing and foot travel wear. If you figure 3 beef and 3 dairy cows that’s six animals which a lot of people suggest stocking rates of an acre per animal if you don’t want to have to supplement hay and feed because they wore out their graze areas. Free range chickens need to be put in at night or you have to accept that they’ll succumb to predation. Rabbits can be kept in smaller confines than the rest. Hogs can also get away with smaller pens. A garden to support what you have in mind (if it is successful, mind you) I would estimate to need to be in the range of an acre in size. Fruit trees can be grown in smaller orchards (dwarf trees help in that department). All of this requires building shelter structures and fencing which either is expensive to pay someone else to do, or takes years to accomplish on your own out of your pocket and as time permits.

I realize my response is somewhat negative but it’s also realistic. I know a lot of people in recent years are (with good intentions) thinking they would like to get involved in homesteading but I’m not sure they have realistic views about it. The work and maintenance is overwhelming if you’re not prepared for it.

I would suggest planting a modest sized garden at your current residence this spring and see if you think you can handle one that will support a family. If your town allows it, get a few hens and a rabbit or two and see if the family is up to taking care of animals EVERY SINGLE DAY, even when they want to go away on vacations and when it’s cold and snowy and raining out. Also, try planting a tree and see if you’re willing to take care of that tree for the first few years to make sure it lives through two hot summers before it establishes itself.

I don’t think you should give up your idea, just start it with baby steps because Little House On The Prairie is easy to watch on TV but hard to do in real life. Also start reading the magazine “Countryside and small stock journal” magazine. It’s about exactly what you’re asking.

oh… maybe 7 acres or so.
